Still from Portrait of a Lady, 2004

Alison Ward

Originally from Gainesville Florida, I have been living and working in New York City for almost ten years. After earning a Masters Degree from the School of Visual Arts, I began to create short videos and installations, but have preferred to use performance as my prime medium. In 1997 I formed Tex and Trixie's Amazing Vaudeville Show, which was a smash at WOW Theater, Smack Mellon Gallery, the DUMBO Arts Festival, and the Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Wishing to further develop the amazing Vaudville show's star, my caricature Trixie Trueheart, I joined the Glamazons — a plus size burlesque troupe. While performing throughout the city, she became a more sophisticated personification of my ego and image. I have used her character along with other personalities often in my video work, often pushing my self, the actors, and reality to their limits. Feeling once again the need to tie life experience back into my art, I've begun incorporating all of these elements into digital videos. Stills of my work have been published in a book put together by Kartell and Vogue Italy, and shown in Milan and New York. In July, I had a solo exhibition of video, sculpture, and stills at Espacio Abisal, in Bilbao, Spain. I am currently in a show entitled Princess at CBGB's Gallery in New York.
