Hanging Family History

Valerie Atkisson

My art traces my genetic lineage, a journey of generations, going back 2000 years. The multiplicity of cultures and people involved in this mapping is immense. My genetic and social identity is shaped piece by piece by these people by their handing down of genetics and behavioral patterns. I'm interested in the shape that known and unknown ancestral information takes to form an organic instead of mathematical shape. My work is sometimes accompanied by visual anecdotes serving as personal and universal family lore passed down generation to generation. All of these epic adventures invite the viewer to go back in time with me to their own origins and investigate their place in the human family.
