Yasmine Awais

I began photographing aquariums while living in Japan. As I never visited my parents' homes of Pakistan or the Philippines, this was my first visit to Asia. I found myself in an environment that allowed me to understand my identity while being completely removed from it. This contradiction of examining identity both intimately and objectively is the basis of my work.

Though photographing aquariums, I examine its purpose. I am conscious of the glass that separates me from what is inside, yet the result that I am after is relatedness. The viewer does not see the glass and feels close to the image. I am viewing cultural identity in a similar manner. Seeking an intimacy while being separate.

In recent work, I extend this question by representing various aspects of cultural identity through pie charts. Separate pieces of the self are represented in relation to the whole.
